I definitely get help when I need it. When I first started creating a trafficking schedule for the South Bay family YMCA I had no idea on what the format for that schedule was going to look like, I was completely lost. I would always see co-workers or staff doing things on their own and when they needed help with something they didn’t hesitate. I was pretty nervous at first because I didn’t want to seem like I needed help on an assignment I was just given but I had to do something about that. I asked my mentor Tina if she could explain what the schedule would look like and she verbally explained it to me. It did help a little but, I wanted to seem independent so I told her I would just start it and if I had any questions I would tell her. That ended up going very good because I had more confidence since I knew it wasn’t going to be good at first. it would be okay because I would be getting my work corrected as I worked. I have never had a problem getting my voice heard no matter how "bad" the question is, If I need help I will get it. I rather get the help early before it is too late. I think I have been an Intern you can look up too because I am always trying to stay on task and be helpful whenever I can. I am never not just sitting down doing nothing, I always try to help everyone even if they are not staff members. I am also trying to get involved becoming a Lifeguard for the YMCA, so I’m pretty sure I am staying committed to my work and more. I am still trying to stay busy everyday so I shall be good.
My internship experience is going pretty well. My mentor Tina Medina specializes in marketing for the YMCA. I never thought about marketing for my future career but the more I get exposed to it the more interested I am getting. I have observed my mentor and she is always on the move and talking to really important people about projects she is working on or upcoming events. I feel like she is really helping me become independent the more and more I get assigned things to do. I can't see myself Marketing in the future right now because I haven’t done a big project to make me get hooked, but it is a work in progress. When it is time to work my mentor gets right to it and sets an example for me to get my work done. I like this because she is forming me to become independent in my own work and even though I’m usually on my own the whole time, if I need any help or clarification she is there for me. This whole internship is really helping me get a real feel for how the professional world feels like and what career’s I might consider. I'm barely starting my trafficking schedule project for the Y and I feel towards the end of my project I will get a different perspective in the Marketing world.
For my internship Project I will be doing a trafficking schedule of the South Bay YMCA facilities. I will basically be finding out which hours and days will be most crowded along with finding out which are its weakest days and hours. I will be making a room count every hour to see how many people are in each studio and which ones aren't being used. I then shall have to find a way to get people to start going in at that time. In the End I will show my mentor Tina Medina a graph showing the whole weeks trafficking schedule on how much people are using certain facilities, and which need need help. This whole project revolves around marketing and a lot of brainstorming to have one solid final piece. Luckily My mentor Tina Medina Is really awesome at her job, which is marketing for the YMCA and she will be guiding me along to help me with any problems I encounter. I will need her expert skills to find all those missing details and only help me to improve. Q: What Can I do in advance to be ready to come to work every day?
A: Go through our website and get familiar with other YMCA facility's websites and the history behind the YMCA. Q: What should I know about you before I start working here? A: I don't like doing one thing for a long time, and I like having fun while I work. I like having communication with other co workers and I always have to be organized. I grew up in the South Bay region so it is important to know my community and what they want. I have 3 kids, I like having the ability to manage time for work and my kids. I am a family woman but I also like my work. Q: Why did you choose to work here? A: I wanted to work for an organization that did important things other than just money, I wanted something that impacted our community. Q:Do you consider your career area satisfying? A: Yes! I get to use my strongest skills and I work with different people from the company. Every two days are different for me at work. Q: Is there anything you wish you'd realize about work at my age that you didn't know before? A: Appreciate school and doing homework everyday. It doesn't matter what you decide to get a degree on as long as you have something to show in the future to people. Think of it as an opportunity to learn one more particular subject that you are really interested in. Q: What type of student were you? A: I was a social girl always involved in school related things. I was in cheer in high school, Girls League service club, and i would be involved in committees for homecoming dances and other school events. I had okay grades in high school and college. I was a basic student, not honor role but good enough to get by. I was a student political activist in college that protested against racism, and it really helped me get my voice heard to others. Q: What helped you stay centered and persevered to graduate? A: I always had responsibility's to be a good person, I was also influenced by my family to become successful. I always wanted to do my best, so in the long run it would pay out to me and my future kids. Q: What was it like to get to the path of your career? A: It was full of ups and downs, I gradguated college and got married right after at 23. I got a job right out of college and it lasted for about three years I experianced difernt workfields before I got to the Y. I worked at the Otay ranch mall in marketing for 7 years but I eventually left because I was not being treated right and the company that I worked for eventually got bankrupted so another CEO took over and he was not very nice. They were laying off multiple people and I always had the doubt if I was next. It was just too much stress and I wanted something stable where we all got along and did important things. I started off in from the bottom and familiarized myself with mostly every position and how it feels to be new, I now am able to comprehend others better and work with them so that they feel comfortable and I can be understanding. I eventually heard about the Y from a friend and immediately got hired and I love it ever since. Wow, I did not know camp could be so fun for kids! Today was a overall fun day. I showed up in the morning to a meeting of about 30 differnt staff from different Y locations. During that meeting we played a couple games to break the ice and get to know each other. I took notes about their meeting and all the upcoming events in case they were going to ask me anything after, which wasn't that bad since people were asking questions and I had enough time to write things down. We then had to play a game of personality cards with different traits on each card along with color. We basically had to arrange them in the order you think makes more sense to you and falls into your personality. It was really cool because we got to see different people with different personality's explain why they are like that. In the end we explained why each different personality category is useful at the YMCA. Everything and everyone was just so awesome in their own way. I didn't know mostly any of them but I only needed a few minutes to know how they were. It was a really awesome little workshop they did with us there, i want to show this to my class maybe. After that it was just a cool unassigned tuore that a mentor named Matt gave us around the Surf camp and all its awesome activities. Matt seems like a really cool guy so far, really energetic and has a passion for what he does. I will eventually start to learn marketing so I cant wait what that's like... (haha) I am just excited overall and happy I got the YMCA .
Today was a pretty successful day! Something that struck me about the YMCA was that I had no Idea they were so organized and the overall staff was really fun and nice. I really liked how everyone that showed up today and was in the room with us , had a positive attitude and the energy. I think the thing that stood out to me the most today was the lesson that we had about child abuse. It was a really strong topic to talk about and very serious, I liked this because on the first day they were already giving us a mature topic. I am really excited for going to different departments and meeting new people along with the events I am suppose to go. I'm really looking forward to meet and learn marketing skills. I am actually not worried about anything so far besides the gas I will be wasting to go everywhere, but It will be fun.
So currently as I stand for my internship is going well but I'm not fully satisfied. I recently got accepted to the south bay YMCA in marketing and I have no Idea on what that is going to look like. I personally think I can do way better than YMCA. I was thinking about the Olympic training center but I have to talk to Lisa about that. If things don't work out as I imagined them to, I think I'm going to just go with my back up internship which is the south bay YMCA. So far I'm excited and eager for anything that comes my way so Good Luck Me! It is now almost internship month and I have achieved on obtaining a internship. I ended up getting the one I interviewed for on interview day and it was for the south-bay YMCA. So currently I am pretty excited for doing this internship. I ended up getting marketing for the YMCA so I don't know what exactly I will be doing but it will be fun. I am ready for anything they throw at me so I shall be waiting. South Bay YMCA |
